Ms. Chieko Umeno is a Design Engineer at Toshiba Mitsubishi-Electric Industrial Systems Corporation (TMEIC) in Japan. She got M.Eng degree in Electrical Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2006. She joined TMEIC in 2010 and has been involved in development of PV inverter products and leading their certification projects for international markets.

Women Engineers in the Technical and Industrial field in Japan

Dr. Keiko Shimizu

Speakers’ Bio

Dr. Keiko Shimizu received the bachelor’s degree of physics from Tohoku university in 1988 and since then has been working in Toshiba Corporation and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation. She received the Dr. Engineering from Kyoto university in 2001, continued working in the company and have 2 children.

She is a winner of the application paper prize of the IFAC world congress in 1993, and several Japanese prizes. She has been working to apply the control theory to the actual process control loops, and carry out the simulation studies, the plant analysis, and design control loops. She is a member of IEEE, IEEJ, SICE and ISCIE. Currently she is a director of SICE.

Sustainability and Humanitarian Engineering Education

Prof. Mogan Kiani
Texas Christian University, USA

Speakers’ Bio

Morgan Kiani (S’05–M’05–SM’17) has been a faculty member in the Department of Engineering at Texas Christian University since 2011. She received her Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2009. She was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Texas at Arlington prior to joining TCU. Dr. Kiani has authored several scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. She has a patent on active control of Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIG) used in wind energy harvesters.

She is spearheading STEM initiatives activities across underrepresented students and communities with disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. Her goal is to make sure that no child misses the opportunity of a STEM career no matter of the geographical location, the stage of life or education level.

She has been instrumental in promoting the use of renewable sources of energy in underprivileged communities across the world through IEEE Industrial Electronics Society and IEEE Smart Village. Her research, scholarship, teaching and service in engineering department at TCU, across IEEE societies, and non-profit groups have allowed her to empower individuals to engage in activities that promote access to clean green energy, healthy living, and well-being for urban communities in other countries as well. She is an influential member of the Women in Engineering committee in IEEE Industrial Electronics Society and offers advice and introduces resources that can help women gain the confidence to set higher education and career goals. She encourages women and young girls who are in the STEM field to continue to make an impact and find opportunities to advance their skills in the STEM field.

Important things in a human-machine relationship -What I learned from my experiences in Japan and France-

Dr. Yukiko Osawa

Speakers’ Bio

Dr. Yukiko Osawa received her B.E. degree (2015) in system design engineering and the M.E. (2016) and Ph.D. degrees (2019) in integrated design engineering from Keio University, Yokohama, Japan. She was a Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) from 2017 to 2019, working on thermal control for human-friendly intelligent assistance systems.

From 2019 to 2021, she was a JSPS Overseas Research Fellow and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CNRS (Le Centre national de la recherche scientifique), LIRMM (Le Laboratoire d’Informatique, de Robotique et de Microélectronique de Montpellier) in France. She was involved in IDH (Interactive Digital Humans) team and developed a soft robotic shell, collaborating with MITSUI CHEMICALS, INC.

She currently works at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan, working on thermal techniques for human-machine interaction in industrial fields.

She was the recipient of the Distinguished Paper Award from the Institute of Electric Engineers of Japan (IEEJ) in 2017, and received the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Ikushi Award in 2018. Her research interests include human interface, human-robot interaction, haptics, and thermal systems. She is a Member of IEEJ, as well as IEEE.

Prof. Tran Phuong Thao

Dr. Tran Phuong Thao received M.S. degree in Electrical, Electronics and Information Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Energy and Environment Science from Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan in 2010 and 2013, respectively. At present, she is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Electronics and Information Engineering, Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan. Her main research interests include motion control, robotics, embedded systems, human-robot interactions, intelligent control and sensing, AI, data science.
